Dabirul Islam, a seven-time Member of Parliament (MP) for Thakurgaon-2 constituency, has been arrested.
He was taken into custody from the house of Awami League leader Alamgir Hossain in Ruhia police station, Thakurgaon Sadar upazila, around 2:30am on Wednesday.
Thakurgaon Superintendent of Police Sheikh Zahidul Islam confirmed the arrest, adding that Dabirul was arrested at Ramnath Bazar in connection with a case filed at Baliadangi police station, in which he is the prime accused.
On September 3, Habibul Islam Bablu filed an extortion case against 28 people, including Dabirul Islam and his elder son, Mazharul Islam Sujan.
The complaint alleges that Bablu has been occupying around 90 acres of land in Berojgari Mouza in Baliadangi upazila.
According to the case, Dabirul and the other accused demanded Tk10 crore from the plaintiff.
In addition to this case, Dabirul Islam has also been accused of involvement in an August 5 incident in which four BNP leaders were burned to death in Thakurgaon Road area.
Police sources said that Dabirul Islam is scheduled to be produced in court on Thursday.
