Students of Jamalpur Nursing and Midwifery College has staged a protest and sit-in on Tuesday, demanding that former in-charge Rani Rahman and cashier Saiful Islam hand over their responsibilities to the acting in-charge.
The protests began in front of the college's main gate early in the morning.
During the demonstration, the students locked teachers and staff inside the academic building by chaining the doors from the outside.
Protesters, including students Mission Iben Siraj, Shapla, Halima Jannat, and Lavlu, addressed the crowd. They claimed that Rani Rahman resigned on September 23 without handing over the college's accounts and has been missing since.
Following her absence, cashier Saiful Islam also disappeared, leaving the college without proper management.
The students said they are now facing food shortages in the hostel due to a lack of funds and are encountering various academic and logistical challenges.
They demanded that both Rahman and Islam appear by 5pm on Tuesday to officially hand over all responsibilities to the acting in-charge, Ranjana Thigidi, in the presence of the faculty and students.
When neither Rahman nor Islam appeared by the deadline, the students announced further plans for a candlelight vigil and an overnight occupation of the college premises.
Acting in-charge Ranjana Thigidi said: "The students are not allowing us to leave the building. Although Rani Rahman named me as the acting in-charge in her resignation letter, she did not officially hand over any responsibilities, making it difficult to fulfill the students' demands. I contacted her, and she said she would only hand over the accounts once an official order is issued appointing a new in-charge."
Attempts to reach Rani Rahman and Saiful Islam for comment were unsuccessful.
