The recent clashes between the ethnic minority and Bangalee settlers in Rangamati have resulted in a loss of Tk9 crore.
According to district administration, the violence caused damage to nine vehicles of the Parbatya Chittagong Regional Council, the regional council office, 89 shops, offices of four banks, 85 street vendors, two religious institutions, 46 vehicles, two diagnostic centres, and a police box.
Meanwhile, Rangamati Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Khan stated that a damage assessment committee was formed to prepare a list of the affected parties.
This committee has compiled a list of loss totaling approximately Tk9.2crore, said the DC.
“We have submitted the list to the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs and the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief. Necessary action will be taken based on budget allocation.”
In addition, two cases have been filed with Kotwali police station in Rangamati in connection with the communal violence, including a murder case.
Regarding this, Rangamati's Additional Superintendent of Police (Crimes) Md Shah Imran mentioned that two cases have been filed related to the incident that took place on September 20.
The murder case was filed by the deceased Anik Chakma’s father Ador Sen Chakma.
Besides, a vandalism and arson case was filed by the police.
On September 19, a young man named Md Mamun, 30, was beaten on suspicion of motorcycle theft in Panikhaiya Para, Khagrachari district. He was seriously injured and later pronounced dead at the district hospital.
In protest, a demonstration in Dighinala's Larma Square turned violent, resulting in clashes between the two groups, which led to the deaths of three individuals.
The tension from this incident spread to Rangamati district town the following day.
On Friday morning, hundreds of indigenous people marched in the district town, which escalated into clashes between the two sides.
To control the situation, the district administration imposed Section 144. A young man named Anik Chakma was killed, and 63 others were injured in the violence.
