Three tourists, abducted by criminals while returning in a private car from Sajek to Khagrachari, have been rescued.
Security forces conducted an operation and successfully rescued them on Tuesday.
The rescued tourists are SM Nahid Uzzaman, 38, son of Mojibur Rahman from the village of Jhaudangi Kathiahkali; Jobair Alam, 38, son of Habibur Rahman from Talma village; and Mamun Fakir, 38, son of Kuddus Fakir from Taleswar village of Nagarkanda upazila in Faridpur district.
Khagrachari Superintendent of Police Arefin Jewel reported that when the tourist vehicle reached the fish market area of Boalkhali Bazaar in the Dighinala police station, unidentified assailants intercepted their vehicle and took them to an unknown location.
Later, they demanded a ransom of Tk50 lakh.
The abductors contacted the victims’ relatives using the victims' mobile numbers, pressuring them to pay the ransom.
The police officer stated that a relative of the victims called the Superintendent of Police in Khagrachari to report the incident.
The police then contacted the abducted individuals' mobile numbers.
Sensing police activity, the abductors released the victims but threatened them not to inform the army or police about the incident.
The victims quickly arrived at the police superintendent's office to provide details of the incident. Legal action is currently being initiated regarding the matter, said the SP.
