Moin Uddin Shipon, the former officer-in-charge (OC) of Sylhet Kotwali Model police station, has been arrested in connection with the murder of journalist ATM Turab.
The arrest was made by a task force in the Gopinathpur area of Madhabpur, Habiganj, early on Monday.
Sub-inspector Sadrul Hasan Khan, duty officer at Madhabpur police station, confirmed the arrest.
"BGB members brought Moin Uddin to the police station early in the morning," he said.
According to sources, Assistant Director Md Yar Hossain of the 55 BGB received a tip-off that illegal weapons were hidden at Moin Uddin's house in Gopinathpur Masterbari of Madhabpur upazila.
Acting on this information, a task force led by the Upazila Nirbahi Officer conducted a raid in the area. While no weapons were found during the operation, Moin Uddin was arrested.
Moin Uddin is a prime suspect in the murder of young journalist ATM Turab, who was shot dead at Court Point, Sylhet, on July 19. Several police officers, including Moin Uddin, were involved in the shooting, according to the case filed at Kotwali police station under Sylhet Metropolitan Police.
Moin Uddin has been accused of various other crimes, including involvement in sugar smuggling during his tenure as OC at both Sylhet Metropolitan Police's Airport and Kotwali stations, allegedly embezzling crores of taka.
It is also alleged that under his leadership, several ambushes and shootings were carried out on students during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Sylhet city. Following the uprising, OC Moin Uddin went into hiding.
