Unidentified attackers beat an Awami League leader to death after intruding into his home in Pachpara village under Chandrogonj union in Lakshmipur Sadar upazila late on Sunday.
The deceased was Nur Alam, 60, the general secretary of a local ward unit of the Awami League and a tailor by profession.
The victim’s son, Arif Hossain, said Nur was at home when someone rang him up on his mobile phone, warning that people were coming to attack him.
“He was trying to leave the house but 10-12 people armed with sticks arrived shortly, who chased him and started beating him up. At one point, they threw him into a nearby pond, pulled him out and continued to thrash him.
“He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead."
Arif claimed to have recognized one of the attackers, a man named Khokon, who is “affiliated with the BNP.”
“It was under his leadership that my father was killed. Even though my father was involved with the Awami League, he never harmed anyone, nor did he have any enemies. He was killed purely for political reasons," he said.
Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital’s Dr Zainal Abedin said Nur had been brought in dead, adding that his body was in the morgue.
Chandrogonj police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Emdadul Haque said police had been sent to the scene and were investigating the killing.
