Narayanganj district correspondent of Desh TV Billal Hossain was attacked and beaten by a group of men on Friday evening in the Mission Para area of Nawab Salimullah Road in Narayanganj city on Friday.

Following the assault, police detained a man named Rubel in connection with the incident.

The attack took place while Billal and Gazi TV cameraperson Arif Hossain were having tea at a local shop.

Arif, who witnessed the assault, recounted: "We had just sat down to drink tea when a group of four-five men, including Rubel, surrounded Billal with sticks in hand. Rubel confronted Billal, accusing him of not being a journalist, and then started beating him. Despite my attempts to intervene, they continued to attack him."

Billal tried to flee to escape the assault but was severely beaten before being rescued by locals and taken to Narayanganj 300-bed hospital for initial treatment. He was later transferred to a private hospital for further care.

Speaking from the hospital, Billal said: "I was sitting for tea as usual when suddenly a group approached me and began beating me without asking any questions. I had to run for my life."

Nazrul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sadar Model police station, confirmed the detention of Rubel.

"After an initial investigation, Rubel has been taken into police custody. Legal action will be taken once a formal complaint is received," he said.
