The Detective Branch (DB) of police on Friday detained a man over his involvement in harassing women in Cox’s Bazar.
Several videos of the incidents went viral on social media.
The detainee, identified as Mohammad Farokul Islam , 22, hails from Satkania upazila in Chittagong district.
Cox's Bazar Superintendent of Police Muhammad Rahmat Ullah confirmed the matter.
Farokul Islam is currently being interrogated. Legal action will follow if a formal complaint is filed, said the SP.
In one of the videos, which surfaced on Facebook on Friday morning, shows a group of around 20 young men surrounding a woman, with many recording the incident on their mobile phones.
One man is seen holding the woman by the ear and beating her with a stick while ordering her to leave the beach.
In another video, the same group approached a woman sitting on a beach chair late at night. They questioned why she was at the beach at that hour and forced her to leave.
The woman was shown repeatedly saying: "I am just a tourist, what have I done wrong?"
A third video shows a woman desperately asking police officers near a restaurant at Sugandha Beach for help to retrieve her mobile phone, which had been taken by the group.
In yet another video, Farokul is seen repeatedly hitting a woman lying on the floor with sticks, as she begged him to stop.
