Locals protest death of duo after detention by joint forces

Local people have staged a demonstration over the death of two persons after their detention by joint forces in Gaibandha. The deceased are Sohrab Hossain Apple and Shafiqul Islam. 

They formed a human chain in Bharatkhali Bazar area of ​​Saghata Upazila on Thursday morning. They demanded the trial of those allegedly involved in the killing of Sohrab and Shafiqul.

At the same time, the police have sued five people, including Sohrab and Shafiqul, in an arms case. The case was filed by Sub-Inspector (SI) Deepak Kumar Roy with Saghata police station, Gaibandha Additional Superintendent of Police (Admin and Finance) Ibne Mizan confirmed.

The two men were picked up by joint forces from their houses at Saghata upazila in Gaibandha district after midnight on Monday. They died on Tuesday.

Police have claimed that they died due to sickness during the raids. Their relatives alleged that the duo died due to torture after detention. 

Regarding the case against Sohrab and Shafiqul, Ibne Mizan said: "Their names will be omitted from the charge sheet of the case."

Sub-Inspector (SI) Deepak Kumar Roy claimed that the case was filed before they died on Tuesday morning.

Meanwhile, two other detainees are currently undergoing treatment at different facilities. Of them, Shahadat Hossain has been sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital and Mosharraf Sweet has been admitted to Gaibandha General Hospital. 

Locals informed this reporter that former upazila chairman Sweet and his brother Sujauddoula have formed a syndicate in the area. They were involved in land grabbing and illegal sand mining. People could not resist them during the Awami League regime. But after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, many people started speaking out about their illegal activities.
