A robbery occurred early at the residence of Manik Mia, a local BNP leader and owner of a residential hotel, in the tourist town of Kuakata, Kalapara upazila on Tuesday.

According to police and family sources, a group of 7-8 masked robbers forcibly entered the home of BNP Ward Secretary Manik Mia in Ward No 4 at approximately 2am.

The assailants tied up Manik with a rope and proceeded to ransack the house.

The robbers, armed with a pistol, demanded the key to an almirah. After obtaining the key, they stole Tk50,000 in cash, 15 pieces of gold jewelry, and four Android mobile phones.

Manik and his wife were brutally beaten when they initially resisted handing over the almirah key. Both victims sustained injuries during the assault.

The robbers were masked, so the victims could not identify them.

Following the robbery, an attempt was made to contact Mohipur Thana Police, but the call reportedly went unanswered.

The situation only came to light when locals, responding to the commotion, intervened and alerted authorities.

Mohipur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Anwar Hossain Talukder denied the allegation of a delayed response, saying: "We did not get any call."

In response to the incident, Kalapara circle Additional Superintendent of Police, Bimal Krishna Mondal, visited the crime scene in the morning.

An investigation has been launched into the robbery, and legal action will be pursued, he said.
