Power has been cut off at Rangpur Medical College Hospital following a fire in the electricity control room next to the Medicine Outpatient Department on the first floor.
At least five people were injured as patients and their relatives panicked and tried to flee the building.
RMCH Assistant Director Dr Akhtaruzzaman has confirmed the matter.
Upon receiving the news, hospital staff attempted to extinguish the fire with fire extinguishers. After about half an hour of effort, they managed to bring the fire under control.
Two units from the fire service arrived at the hospital, but by then, the staff had already put out the fire.
Officials and staff initially suspected that the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit and many pieces of equipment had been destroyed.
Aminur Rahman from the Shalbon area of the city, who had come to the hospital for outpatient treatment, said that he was startled by the news of the fire.
He said that people, including himself, started fleeing the scene due to panic.
