Employees demand resignation of NIB DG

Protestors presented  5-point demand

Update : 01 Sep 2024, 11:12 PM

Employees of the National Institute of Biotechnology (NIB) staged a demonstration demanding the resignation of Director General (DG) Md Salimullah in Ashulia of Savar yesterday.

The employees staged the demonstration in Ganakbari area of the upazila around noon yesterday.

The protestors said that they started their protests on August 19 with a 5-point demand, including the introduction of a pension system, the creation of new posts, and seeking an end to discrimination in promotion. The other demand of the employees is increasing their job status to permanent from contractual.

They said, on August 20, they sent a memorandum to the director general. However, after failing to get any response, they started a one-point agitation yesterday—the resignation of the director general.

The protesters brought various allegations against the DG, including corruption, nepotism and institutional irregularities. They said their movement will continue until the DG resigns.

In this regard, Md Salimullah said: “We don't have a pension scheme. Some promotions are pending, and new posts are not available yet. A section of our officers and employees were agitating with several demands. If they think that a change is necessary, then they will do what they think is best. I will not talk about it. Since they are calling me a failed person as their demands are not met, the ministry will make the final call.”
