A death-row convict has died following a fight with another prisoner at Kashimpur High-Security Central Jail in Gazipur.
The deceased was identified as Hannan Mia, 41. His prisoner number was 4050/A. Hannan Mia was from Kandapara village in Kalmakanda Upazila, Netrokona, and was the son of the late Abul Hashem Fakir.
The incident occurred in the mental ward of the prison on the morning of Wednesday.
According to Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shah Alam of the Konabari police station in Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP), Hannan Mia was in the mental ward of Kashimpur High-Security Central Jail. He had been sentenced to death in a murder case filed with Kalmakanda police station.
On Wednesday morning, he locked into a fight with another inmate in the ward, resulting in a severe head injury.
Prison guards rescued him in a critical condition and initially took him to Shahid Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur.
Later in the afternoon, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for advanced treatment, where doctors declared him dead.
Bacchu Mia, in charge of the police camp at DMCH, confirmed the death, stating that it was due to a head injury.
The body has been kept in the morgue for an autopsy.
He also noted that when the critically ill inmate was brought to the hospital from Kashimpur Prison, doctors pronounced him dead.
