The Rajshahi University (RU) authorities have formed a five-member inquiry committee to investigate multiple allegations of sexual offence levelled against Law Department Associate Professor Sadiqul Islam Sagar.

Besides, he has been asked to refrain from all kinds of academic activities, including classes and exams, during the 10-day investigation.

Prof Sayeeda Anju, the head of the department, will lead the probe body, according to a unanimous decision of the Academic Committee held on Tuesday afternoon.

At the end of the meeting, a statement issued by Prof Anju said: "The Law Department of Rajshahi University adopts a policy of 'zero tolerance' regarding sexual harassment and torture. The students have made serious allegations about Sadiqul Islam Sagar, Associate Professor of the Department of Law, in various media and personally with us.”

The other members of the fact-finding committee are Prof Morshedul Islam, Prof Abdul Alim, Prof Shahin Zohora and Associate Prof Salma Akhter Khanom. When contacted, Prof Morshedul said they would discuss the next course of action after a meeting of the committee on Wednesday.

Earlier, the students were enraged and demanded action after a female student brought allegations of rape and intimidation against the teacher in a Facebook group of the university on Monday. She alleged that the teacher had blackmailed and forced many girls into sexual harassment and torture.
