A traffic police constable in Chittagong was assaulted after obstructing a vehicle from driving on the wrong side of the road.

The Constable Sohrab Hossain, who suffered a broken nose and facial injuries, was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

The incident took place on Road No 1 in the Khulshi area around 1:30pm on Tuesday.

The driver of a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado was apprehended by bystanders and handed over to the police, said Kabirul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Khulshi police station.

The driver identified as Rafiqul Alam, employed in the vehicle division of South Eastern Food Products Limited, was driving a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado with the registration number Dhaka Metro-GA 17-4824.

Police sources said that the Prado, traveling in the wrong direction on Khulshi Road No 1, caused a traffic obstruction.

Constable Sohrab Hossain, who was on duty, signaled the driver to stop.

At one stage, the driver allegedly grabbed the constable by the collar and punched him in the face, breaking his nose and tearing his uniform.

Following the assault, the authorities of the South Eastern Food Products Limited terminated Rafiqul Alam.

The company’s HR and Administration Manager, Md Morshed Moinuddin, issued a notice in the afternoon confirming the dismissal.

OC Kabirul Islam said that the driver was detained from the spot by the pedestrians, along with the vehicle.

The injured officer is currently receiving treatment at CMCH.
