One arrested for vandalizing Hindu idol in Rajshahi

He was caught red-handed by locals

Police on Friday arrested a man for vandalizing a Saraswati idol inside a temple in Bagha, Rajshahi.

The arrestee, Bappi Hossain, was a madrasa student, according to reports. 

It was reported that early on Friday, August 23, Bappi broke into several temples, including Kaligram Sarbajanin Durga Temple, in Pakuria's Palpara and Ghoshpara, and vandalized the Saraswati idol.

At around 6am, during the vandalism inside Durga temple, local Hindus aught Bappi red-handed and handed him over to the police.

Following the incident, Arun Sarkar, the president of Kaligram Durga Temple, filed a case against him.

Sujit Kumar Pandey, the president of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council upazila committee condemned the incident and demanded punishment for the act.

Bagha police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Siddiq said Bappi admitted to breaking the temple lock and vandalizing the idol on his own during interrogation. The investigation will continue to determine if others were involved.
