  • 212 villages inundated
  • Around 250,000 people stranded
  • Severe food shortage
Update : 22 Aug 2024, 02:50 PM

The flood situation in Moulvibazar has deteriorated significantly over the past three days, affecting 37 unions and municipal areas across seven upazilas in the district.

As a result, 212 villages in Barlekha, Juri, Rajnagar, Kulaura, Kamalganj, and Srimangal upazilas have been inundated, leaving around 250,000 people stranded and facing severe food shortages.

Floodwaters breached the Manu River embankment at Kadamhata in Rajnagar Upazila, leading to the closure of the Moulvibazar-Rajnagar-Fenchuganj and Moulvibazar-Kulaura-Barlekha roads on Thursday morning.

Additionally, on Wednesday night, the Manu River's embankment broke in several places in Tilagaon Union of Kulaura Upazila, further exacerbating the flooding.

Residents of the affected areas have sought refuge in various shelters. However, due to the lack of attention from public representatives and administration officials, those in the shelters are experiencing acute food shortages.

According to the district administration, 122,687 people in seven upazilas have been affected by the floods, with 4,325 people taking shelter in 16 designated shelters. A total of 212 villages have been flooded in 37 municipal and union areas. The administration has allocated 235 tons of rice and Tk20.5 lakh across the seven upazilas.

As of Thursday noon, Bangladesh Water Development Board reported that the water levels were significantly above the danger line with Juri River by 193cm, Dhalai River by 30cm, Manu River at Chandnighat by 118cm, and at the railway bridge by 85cm.

Additionally, the Kushiara River at Moulvibazar's Sherpur point is flowing 8cm above the danger level.
