A two-hour blockade was held on the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Gopalganj on Thursday, demanding the return of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh.
The protest, organized by local supporters of the Awami League, accused authorities of injustice against the party's leader and daughter of Bangabandhu, Sheikh Hasina.
The blockade took place from 4:30pm to 6:30pm at Ghona Para Bazar in the Ratoil Union of Kashiani upazila.
Thousands of people, led by the Ratoil Union Awami League and various supporters of Bangabandhu from nearby villages, occupied the highway.
Protesters lit set fire to tyres and brandished weapons, including shields, spears, and sticks, to block the road and express their anger.
For two hours, the highway remained closed to traffic, causing a large number of vehicles to be stranded on both sides of the road.
During the protest, demonstrators declared their intention to continue their movement until she returned to Bangladesh.
They vowed to remain on the streets and persist in their struggle until the Awami League leader is back in the country.
Awami League leader Sheikh Mokimul Islam Mokim said: "Sheikh Hasina must be brought back to Bangladesh immediately. A certain group has conspired to force her out of the country by inciting student protests.
“We demand justice for this incident. That's why we took to the highway. We will continue this program until Sheikh Hasina is returned to the country," he added.
