Members of the Bangladesh Police in Barisal yesterday presented an 11-point demand and announced a strike until the demands were met.
They held a protest rally inside the police lines under the banner of “Subordinate Police Reform Platform” and toured through the Barisal Police Lines.
In a written statement, the policemen pointed out that the chain of command of the police has broken down. High officials or guardians of the force went into hiding without prescribing any guidance. Due to this, the policemen are currently feeling insecure.
The houses of the policemen in the district are also under attack. Members of the police force were brutally killed. Many were injured in the attack on police lines, police stations and police boxes across the district.
In this situation, until the safety of every member of the police force is ensured, the police in Barisal will observe a work abstention.
They also demanded that the attackers be brought to justice. An independent commission should also be formed by the police so that the force is not misused by the government to implement its political agenda.
The demands include fixing an 8-hour duty period for the force and taking measures for their security at work.
They said that the appointment of sergeants and sub-inspectors should be made by the public service commission.
The Police Regulation of Bengal should be reformed and modernized and the status of the police force should be increased, with the 11-point demands included.
They also demanded punitive measures against corrupt officials of the force.
