Bodies of 29 Awami League leaders, family members recovered

10 killed in Satkhira

The bodies of at least 20 leaders of the Awami League, its associate bodies and their family members were recovered across the country on Tuesday.

At least 10 people were killed in attacks and violence in Satkhira following news of Sheikh Hasina's resignation from the post of prime minister and her departure from the country on Monday. 

The houses and business establishments of several Awami League leaders and activists were vandalized and looted.

Police also reported arson and looting at Satkhira Sadar and Shyamnagar police stations.

In Comilla, at least 11 people were killed in mob attacks. Six people were killed as the three-storey house of former councilor Md Shah Alam in Ashoktala was set on fire by miscreants. 

Their bodies were recovered from the house on Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Among them, there were five teenagers.

The deceased are Shaon, 12, Ashiq, 14, Shakeel, 14, Roni, 16, and Mohin, 17, and Mahfuzur Rahman, 22. 

Eyewitnesses said that on Monday, an angry mob attacked the house of Shah Alam in the area.

At one point, some people climbed to the third floor of the house.

Meanwhile, the mob set fire to the ground floor of the house.

Later, the people who took shelter on the third floor died of smoke inhalation and were burned to death.

At least 10 people were injured in this incident. Among them, one seriously injured is undergoing treatment in the ICU.

Meanwhile, four people died in a fire set by an angry mob at the house of Member of Parliament Shafiqul Islam Shimul of Natore-2 (Sadar and Naldanga) Constituency.

The bodies were found in several rooms, balconies, and roofs of the MP’s house, named ‘Jannati Palace,’ in the city Tuesday morning.

The body of a college student named Akib Hossain, 17, was first found around 7:30am. He was an 11th-grade student at Natore City College. 

The other three deceased are Siam Hossain, 18, Yasin Ali, 18, and Shariful Islam Mohan, 27.

According to witnesses and local residents, after hearing the news of Sheikh Hasina's resignation, an angry crowd set fire to the house of MP Shafiqul.

Next to the house, a five-story building belonging to his younger brother and the old house of the MP were also set on fire. Looting continued in all three houses. 

In Feni, local people recovered the bodies of two Juba League leaders.

Of them, the body of Juba League leader Mushfiqur Rahim was found under a bridge in Sonagazi Upazila.

Mushfiq was the office secretary of Dhalia Union Juba League. 

Meanwhile, the body of Badsha Mia, another Juba League leader was found in Feni Sadar Upazila in the morning.

In Lalmonirhat, local people recovered six bodies from the house of district AL Joint General Secretary Suman Khan. The house was set on fire by a mob on Monday. 

In Bogra, a mob hacked to death two Juba League leaders. The incident took place in Dirkhipara and Shajahanpur upazilas.
