Ten people, including children, died when a boat carrying Rohingyas sank in the Bay of Bengal at Teknaf in Cox's Bazar on Tuesday.

At least 22 people are missing following the accident, which occurred as they fled the ongoing fighting between the Arakan Army and armed forces in Myanmar's Rakhine state.

The incident took place around 12pm in the Habichara and Rajarchhara point areas of Teknaf Sadar Union.

Osman Gani, officer-in-charge (OC) of Teknaf Model police station, said that fishermen recovered the bodies of nine people from the sea.

"We asked the local public representatives to take necessary measures for the bodies," he added.

Rashid Mia, a UP member of Ward No. 1 of Teknaf Sadar Union, said that while fleeing for their lives from Myanmar, the bodies of 10 people were recovered from the boat sinking incident in Teknaf sea.

According to police instructions, preparations are underway to hand over the bodies of the victims to their relatives in the camp.

It is reported that 31 Rohingyas were on board the boat that sank.

Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Adnan Chowdhury said: “I have heard the news of the recovery of the bodies of nine Rohingyas in the boat sinking in the sea. We are looking into this. In this situation, Rohingyas from Myanmar continue to try to infiltrate into Bangladesh. However, our Bangladesh Coast Guard and Border Guard BGB are on alert to deal with any situation at the border.”

In the last two days, at least a few thousand Rohingyas have infiltrated through Teknaf border, local public representatives said.

Public representatives said that many of the Rohingyas infiltrated the camp through various points in the last two days by boat, but some were detained by the BGB members. They have been kept in BGB custody.
