Update : 03 Aug 2024, 05:06 PM

Students and teachers of Rajshahi University (RU) and various other educational institutions have blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi Highway defying heavy rain to press their one-point demand.

The demonstration began at 10:30am on Saturday at the city's Talaimari intersection. Later, at around 2pm, it ended in front of RU's main gate.

During the protests, the protesters were seen holding placards and chanting slogans.

The protesters say they want the trial of the killing of the students and the resignation of the murderous government.

Around 2,000 people, including teachers, students, and guardians from various professions, gathered to join the processions.

Despite the rain, the protesters marched towards Bhadra and then returned towards the university.

On their way back, they vandalized the windows of a police box at the Talaimari intersection and upon seeing the police, chanted “Fake, Fake (Bhua, Bhua)”.

Meanwhile, a policeman named Saiful Islam was seriously injured in the student attacks.

This police member was standing near the main gate, in front of the Motihar Mazar when several protesters attacked him with sticks. He was injured and later transported to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in a battery-operated auto-rickshaw.

Additionally, during the student protests in Rajshahi city, the Awami League office was vandalized and set on fire.

Banners and festoons of Awami League leaders were also destroyed.
