In protest against nationwide attacks on students and mass killings, as well as demanding the implementation of a 9-point agenda, students in Sreepur, Gazipur staged a major demonstration on Saturday.

The protest began in the morning at Maona intersection.

From 11:30am, traffic was halted on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway between Gorgoria Masterbari and Jaina Bazar in Sreepur.

Students gathered at the Palli Bidyut intersection on the highway and later moved towards the Maona intersection flyover.

During the protest, students attacked three police vehicles parked under the Sreepur flyover, setting them on fire.

They also set fire to two highway police boxes located under the flyover. In response, the police fired rubber bullets and tear gas in an attempt to control the situation, leading to clashes that injured approximately 15 people.

According to local sources, thousands of students from Sreepur Mukti Joddha Rahmat Ali Government College, Abdul Awal Degree College, Maona Piyar Ali Degree College, and other educational institutions marched with sticks under the Maona flyover at around 11:30am.

At the same time, leaders and activists of the Sreepur Upazila and Municipal Awami League and Gazipur District Jubo League maintained a peaceful presence under the flyover.

The protesters chanted various slogans against the Awami League government.

Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Akbar Ali Khan said: “We were peacefully stationed on Shreepur Road without weapons. Suddenly, the protesters attacked the unarmed police, vandalized the police vehicles, and set them on fire. They also set fire to two highway police boxes under the flyover.”

After the protests, the demonstrators marched around the flyover and returned to the Palli Bidyut intersection.

Despite a heavy police presence, there was no attempt to obstruct the protesters' march. The protesters continued to demand justice for the slain students.
