A confrontation broke out between students of Rajshahi University (RU) and police after officers attempted to detain several students following a scheduled program on campus on Thursday.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime and Operations) of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, Mohammad Hemayetul Islam, informed the media: "There has been no incident here so far. Everything was calm and peaceful. However, two or three individuals, who were not students but outsiders, caused a commotion with our police. They were confronting an officer, which led to questioning."
The incident occurred around 11:15am at Shaheed Buddhijibi Chattar of the university, following a pre-announced program.
About 100 students from various schools and colleges gathered at RU, where teachers initiated a silent procession with red cloths on their faces. Students from various educational institutions in Rajshahi participated.
After marching through different roads on the university campus for about an hour, the silent procession concluded at Shaheed Buddhijibi Chattar. As the students were leaving the campus, a scuffle broke out when some white-clad armed individuals tried to detain the students.
Teachers rushed to the scene upon hearing the students' screams and attempted to rescue them. This led to a massive scuffle between the white-clad police and the teachers and students.
At one point, the university administration and teachers intervened, forcing the police to release the detained students.
