Update : 11 Jul 2024, 12:30 PM

Two people, including a child, were killed in separate landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in Cox's Bazar city early on Thursday.

The deceased were Md Hasan, 5, and Jamila Begum, 35, both residents of South Rumaliarchara.

“Jamila was severely injured when a landslide hit her home. She was taken to the local state hospital where she died during treatment," said Rakibuz Zaman, officer-in-charge of Cox's Bazar Sadar police station.

In the same area, Hasan was killed when a house wall collapsed due to a landslide.

Continuous heavy rainfall since Wednesday has led to waterlogging in the low-lying areas of Cox's Bazar and several villages in Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila, with further landslides feared in the hilly regions.

The local weather office reported 92 millimetres of rain in the 24 hours to 6am, with an additional 94 millimetres in just the next three hours.
