Bangladesh Tea Board Chairman Major General Md Ashraful Islam has said that the board is meeting its goal of meeting domestic demand regularly and exporting tea abroad.
He announced that Bangladesh tea production surpassed domestic demand as the country currently produces 103 million kg of tea against a demand of 95 million kg.
He thanked all the planters and everyone involved in the tea sector and said the goal of the Tea Board is to meet the domestic demand and export tea abroad.
This year’s Tea Day theme was "Tea Day Commitment - Export-Oriented Tea Industry."
He said this as the chief guest at an open tea-tasting event held at the Sreemangal Tea Research Center in Moulvibazar on Saturday afternoon.
Major General Md Ashraful Islam said that post-independence, more tea was exported abroad. Currently, the demand for tea has increased both domestically and internationally. To increase exports, improving the quality of tea is necessary.
He emphasized the importance of a fair price and fair pay system. Ensuring that buyers at auctions get a fair price and everyone involved in the industry receives fair wages is crucial.
The event was presided over by Dr Md Ismail Hossain, director of the Bangladesh Tea Research Institute.
Major Ashraful said: “Various types of training programs have been arranged. We are emphasizing tea-tasting and making courses. On June 4, Tea Day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina emphasized the importance of various value-added teas.
“We will not produce low-priced tea, instead, we are working towards producing high-quality, value-added tea,” he added.
The tea production target for 2024 is set at 108 million kilograms. However, six months of the year have already passed, and the tea season mainly starts in April.
"We are somewhat behind, but we are optimistic about achieving the target,” he said.
