Jamalpur flood worsens: 150,000 people marooned

The overall flood situation in Jamalpur has deteriorated due to the hilly downpour from upstream, leaving 150,000 people waterlogged.

Jamalpur Water Development Board Executive Engineer Rafiqul Islam said that the water level of the Jamuna River at Bahadurabad Ghat point in Dewanganj rose by 1cm in the last 24 hours, flowing 93cm above the danger level.

This has left 150,000 people waterlogged in 45 unions of Dewanganj, Bakshiganj, Islampur, Melandah, Madarganj, and Sarishabari upazilas, he added.

New areas are being inundated by floodwaters every day, submerging thousands of hectares of crops and roads.

The flood situation in Islampur upazila of Jamalpur has become severe, with hundreds of thousands of people living in dire conditions.

Road communication has been cut off with seven unions.

Water levels are rapidly rising, severing road connections between Islampur upazila and Baniyabari, Delirpara, Guthailbazar, Amtalibazar to Debraipatch, Uliahbazar, Bamna, Shingbhanga, Uliah, Sonamukhi, Belgacha, Jarultala, Kulakandi, and Pachabhola, Molomganj, Sarishabari of Sadar Union, and the western eight unions.

Roads, including Natrakanda Road and the central Eidgah ground in the municipal area, are submerged.

Residents of Amtali village in Chinaduli union, Islampur upazila said that they are facing enormous problems due to the sudden rise in water levels and the flooding of the market. They are in a very tough situation.

Abdus Salam, chairman of Chinaduli Union said that 20,000 people in the entire union are waterlogged, with roads submerged. Flood-affected people are living in great distress.

Many lost their belongings and poultry to the sudden influx of water, he added.

Similarly, Abdul Malek, chairman of Belgacha union in the same upazila, said that the entire union's residents are waterlogged and living in a helpless state.

Islampur Upazila Project Implementation Officer Mehedi Hasan Titu said that due to the severity of the flood situation, classes have been suspended in 60 primary schools, 50 secondary schools, and 5 higher secondary educational institutions.

He added that 107 shelters are prepared for flood victims, and 120 metric tons of rice and dry food are being distributed.

Islampur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Sirajul Islam said that all headmasters and managing committees of the affected educational institutions have been instructed to open their school buildings.

Additionally, all chairmen, members, and village police have been instructed to remain vigilant, and medical teams have been prepared, he added.

Religious Affairs Minister Faridul Haque Khan visited the flood-affected areas of Partharshi Union and Kulakandi Union in Islampur upazila and distributed relief after an emergency meeting to address the flood situation.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Alamgir Hossain said that due to the floodwaters, classes in 105 primary schools and 31 secondary schools are suspended in the district. Eleven shelters have been opened for flood victims, with hundreds of families and their livestock taking refuge there.

300 tons of rice and 4,000 packets of dry food have been allocated, and 11 medical teams have been formed for the victims, he added.
