A Comilla court has sent Muradnagar Sadar Union Parishad (UP) secretary Ismail Hossain to jail on Friday in a case filed over issuing a birth certificate to a Rohingya youth.
Comilla district police detective branch (DB) arrested him on Thursday evening from the Nimaikandi area on the Muradnagar-Companiganj road.
On February 15, a Rohingya youth named Yasin, 19, was detained at the Comilla Regional Passport Office. He had come to make a passport using a fake identity claiming to be from Ghorashal village in Muradnagar Upazila.
The passport office officials then handed over the Rohingya youth to the Comilla district detective police.
Following this incident, the DB police filed a case at the Kotwali police station.
During the investigation, the DB found evidence implicating several individuals, including UP Secretary Ismail Hossain.
Muradnagar Sadar Union Chairman Kazi Tufrij Aton said: "I provided the secretary with maximum facilities. Why did he have to do such things? Those who did this for money will be punished."
Comilla District Police DB Officer-in-Charge Rajesh Barua said that UP Secretary Ismail was arrested based on specific information in the case of issuing a birth certificate to the Rohingya youth. He was sent to jail through the court on Friday afternoon.
