Hundreds of workers of National Chemical Manufacturing Company Limited staged a sit-in program in Gazipur demanding five months' salary arrears in front of the Gazipur deputy commissioner's office from 12pm on Tuesday.
The workers first protested in front of the factory in the Barabari area of Gazipur City Corporation in the morning.
After getting no response from the factory authorities, they marched and took a position in front of the office of the deputy commissioner.
Workers have demanded that the illegal lay-off should be withdrawn and payment of five months' arrears of salary and Eid bonus.
They said: “How long will we spend half-starved days? If the salary bonus is not paid they will go on a bigger scale agitation.”
Gazipur district committee member of Bangladesh Trade Union Centre Mohammad Jalal Howladar said that the workers have not been paid any salary for five months. The workers are living an inhuman life without getting paid.
Mahfuzul Islam, president and Rassel Miah, general secretary of the factory’s workers' union were seen dealing with the workers.
MSN Bulu, the owner of the factory, could not be contacted as his mobile phone was switched off.
Gazipur Industrial Police Inspector Rezaul Karim said that the factory authorities are not paying the workers. The matter will be discussed in the industrial police meeting to solve the problem by talking to the owner.
