At least 25 people, including 10 policemen, were injured when locals attacked Shailkupa police station in Jhenaidah on Sunday afternoon in an attempt to rescue an arrested accused.

Additional police forces have been deployed to the area following the incident.

Jhenaidah Superintendent of Police (SP) Azim ul Ahsan said that Shailkupa police had arrested Mushtaq Shikder on Sunday morning. Later in the afternoon, locals surrounded the police station, attempting to free him from custody.

"The attackers started throwing bricks and stones into the police station. When officers tried to stop them, the attackers assaulted the police with local weapons,” he said.

According to police sources, injured officers Abdus Salam, Iqbal Hossain, and Tariqul Islam Meena have been admitted to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital, while another policeman has been transferred to Dhaka for treatment.

It has been reported that Mushtaq Shikder, the detained individual, is an accused in a case. He is a resident of Dhalhara village in Dhalhara Chandra Union and a local Awami League activist.

Police sources indicate that around 500 people from Dhalhara village and surrounding areas, armed with local weapons, attacked the police station upon learning of his arrest. The attackers threw bricks from all sides, resulting in multiple injuries.

In response, police fired 20 to 25 rounds of blank bullets to disperse the crowd.
