Cyclone Remal: 1,468 houses destroyed, 2L people affected in Satkhira

  • 200 hectares of fisheries damaged
  • Crops of 204 hectares damaged

Cyclone Remal caused extensive damages in Satkhira district, leaving over 200,000 people affected, destroying homes and uprooting trees.

Some 1,468 houses in the coastal upazila Shyamnagar and Ashashuni upazilas were destroyed in the cyclone which left 221,176 people homeless. 

Tidal water is now overflowing embankments and flooding fisheries during heavy rains. 

Besides, crop fields, enclosures and ponds were washed away by salty water.

Satkhira District Commissioner Mohammad Humayun Kabir confirmed this information to reporters on Tuesday.

According to the information of the control room of the district administration, people of 43 unions have been directly affected. Numerous trees have been uprooted in Shyamnagar, Asashuni and Kaliganj upazilas along with Satkhira town. 

An old man named Shaukat Moral died on his way to the shelter in the Napitkhali area of ​​Gabura union. 

Although the strong tide overflowed the river and entered the localities, there were no reports of the dam breaking. 

However, 200 hectares of fisheries were damaged due to continuous rain on Monday. Crops of 204 hectares have been damaged.

Satkhira Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Humayun Kabir said that the devastating impact of Cyclone Remal has been going on for two consecutive days. In various upazilas there has been extensive loss of life and property. 

The list of all these losses and affected people will be determined and cooperated in phases, he added.
