Lightning strikes kill seven 

  • A mother, her son among victims in Narsingdi
  • Six others injured

No fewer than seven people, including a minor, have been killed in separate lightning strikes in Narsingdi, Tangail and Gazipur.

In Narsingdi, four people, including a woman and her son, died and two others injured in separate incidents of lightning strikes in the Hajipur and Alokbali in Char (dried-up riverbed) area of ​​Sadar Upazila yesterday.

The deceased are Sharifa Begum, 35, her son Imon Mia, 10, Kaiyum Mia, 20, and Mosleh Uddin, 55.

Sharifa Begum's injured husband Kamal Mia said: "Since the morning, I have been harvesting paddy in the field with my wife, children and a worker. Heavy rain began abruptly around 10am.

“At the time, I was covering my body with polythene to protect myself from the rain. We get hurt when lightning strikes suddenly," he added.

Locals rescued them and took them to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared Sharifa Begum, Imon Mia and kaiyum Mia dead.

Meanwhile, another person named Mosleh Uddin died in a lightning strike in Hajipur.

Narsingdi Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tanveer Ahmed said: "Four people were killed by lightning in a separate incident. The bodies of the deceased have been kept at Sadar Hospital Morgue.”

In Tangail, two cousins were killed and four others injured by lightning strike at Noabari village in Birbashinda union under Kalihati Upazila.

The deceased are identified as Afzal Hossain, 52, and his cousin Amir Hossain, 50. They are residents of Chakdafarpur village of Pirganj upazila of Dinajpur.

According to the locals, six workers, including Afzal and Amir, were harvesting paddy in the field of Hazrat Ali in the area early yesterday morning. 

When it started to rain around 9:30am, lightning struck Afzal and Amir as they were running home from the paddy field. They died on the spot and four others were injured, sub-inspector (SI) of Kalihati Police Station Rajib said.

The injured were taken to Kalihati Upazila Health Complex, he added.

Md Sohrab Ali, union parishad Chairman of Birbashinda Union, said Afzal and Amir had rented a room at Awliabad Bazar and had been harvesting paddy in many nearby areas for the past week.

In Gazipur, a woman named Fatema Akter, 45, died in Sreepur Upazila

Her death was caused by a thunderbolt that struck her around 9:30am while drying up harvested paddy sheafs in the front yard of her house.

She was declared dead at Sreepur Upazila Health Complex an hour later.
