Chittagong transport strike ends early

48-hour strike ends within 12 hours of its start

Update : 28 Apr 2024, 09:19 PM

The Brihattor Chittagong Gana Paribahan Malik-Sramik Oikya Parishad has called off its 48-hour strike within 12 hours of its start.

Manjurul Alam Chowdhury, convener of the organization, made the announcement at around 5:30pm on Sunday.

Manjurul outlined four demands: ensuring the safety of vehicular movement on the Kaptai-Chittagong road, conducting compensation investigations into vehicle burnings, taking action against illegal vehicles and avoiding “unnecessary” prosecution of workers.

The group had initiated the strike following the burning of a bus by protesting students after the death of two Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet) students in a road accident.

Transport leaders said while the fatal accident at Cuet would be addressed through legal means, the vandalism and burning of the vehicle had distressed transport owners and workers, before calling for legal action against the vehicle burning.

The Chittagong deputy commissioner assured them of measures in response to their demands.

Shanto Saha and Tawfiq Hasan, both students of the civil engineering department of Cuet, died after a bus hit their motorbike on the Chattogram-Kaptai road on 22 April.

Afterwards, some Cuet students reportedly vandalized three buses and set another on fire.
