Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Samanta Lal Sen has said that the government is considering enacting a law to ensure the security and safety of doctors across the country.

The Doctors’ Protection Act will be placed in Parliament, and it will be passed at any cost, the minister vowed.

Dr Samanta Lal Sen said these at a view exchange program at the Comilla Medical College Hospital on Thursday.

Condemning recent attacks and assaults on doctors in several areas of the country, including Sylhet and Chittagong, he said beating up service providers cannot bring any good to anyone.

He said that the death of a patient due to negligence during treatment is also unacceptable. Therefore, he said that doctors and medical teams should be more responsible and humane in treating their patients.

The minister said that the patients and their relatives should also show restraint and patience.

He said it is the responsibility of the government to give protection to the doctors while also ensuring proper medical care for all the citizens of the country.

Directors and senior officials of Comilla, Chandpur and Noakhali medical colleges were present at the meeting.

Directorate General of Health Services Director Dr Abul Basar Mohammad Khurshid Alam presided over the meeting. The lawmaker from Comilla-6 constituency, AKM Bahauddin Bahar, spoke at the event as a special guest.

The minister said the government has undertaken a comprehensive program for the development of the health sector. Under the program, new hospitals and medical colleges are being built.

He also announced the establishment of a specialized cancer hospital in Comilla. He called upon the local MP to take the necessary measures in this regard.

Issuing warnings against dishonest doctors, he said the government has taken measures for the well-being of the doctors. Therefore, no doctor should provide services at unlicensed clinics.
