Chinese engineer killed in Gazipur battery factory explosion

  • Six others injured
  • Explosion followed by fire when he tried to repair it

A Chinese engineer has been killed in an explosion at a battery plant in Gazipur’s Kashimpur.

The deceased is Peu Shu Qi, 52.

At least six others were injured in the incident at Chinese-owned Tong Rui Da Industry’s factory at Palash Housing in South Panishail on Tuesday evening, said Md Mohiuddin, inspector (investigation) at Kashimpur police station.

Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Abu Torab Mohammad Shamsur Rahman said that after the factory reopened following Eid-ul-Fitr and Pohela Boishakh holidays, workers found that the boiler was not starting.

The explosion followed by a fire occurred when Peu Shu Qi tried to repair it, he added.

His body was kept at the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital morgue.

On receiving information, police and fire service personnel reached the spot with the help of locals and rescued the injured and sent them to Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Memorial KPJ Specialized Hospital and Nursing College.

Among the injured, Amal Ghosh, 32, has been sent to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the capital for better treatment.

All the injured are Bangladeshi citizens.

Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy assistant director of Gazipur Fire Service, said that two units of Sarabo Fire Service in Kashimpur went to the spot to put out the fire and conducted the rescue operation.
