Update : 15 Apr 2024, 10:58 PM

A massive fire broke out at an oil godown in Mokamtola area of Bogra's Shibganj upazila on Monday afternoon.

The fire originated at the godown of M/s Uttara Traders on Rangpur-Dhaka highway in Mokamtola.

Four units of the fire service brought the fire under control in about two hours.

However, a significant quantity of fuel oil stored in the facility, along with some adjacent residences and two cows, fell victim to the fire.

Additionally, several gas cylinders exploded during the incident, briefly disrupting traffic on the highway.

According to Enamul Haque, the manager of M/s Uttara Traders, the company's owner, Abdul Gafoor, was overseeing the unloading of oil from a Meghna Oil Company tanker around 4:30pm when the fire broke out due to an electrical short circuit. The ensuing blaze engulfed the tanker and spread to the nearby premises, resulting in the destruction of multiple LP gas cylinders, homes, and approximately 80 to 90 barrels of fuel oil.

Shamsul Alam, an official at the Shibganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, said that initial findings indicate an electrical short circuit as the cause of the fire. Fire units from Bogra Sadar, Shibganj, Sonatala, and Gaibandha Gobindganj responded to the emergency and, after a two-hour effort, contained the fire.

A comprehensive assessment of the damage will be conducted once the investigation is concluded.
