A total of 43,427 vehicles crossed the Bangabandhu Bridge in Tangail between 12am and 12pm on Tuesday, collecting Tk3,03,66,850 in tolls.

According to the Bangabandhu Bridge Authority, a total of 27,232 vehicles have crossed the bridge for their respective destinations in the northern part of Bangladesh and the toll collection has crossed Tk1,71,49,500.

Besides, some 16,195 Dhaka-bound vehicles crossed the bridge, and the toll collection reached Tk1,32,61,900.

Ahsanul Pavel, executive engineer of the Bangabandhu Bridge Division said 18 toll booths have been set up on both sides of the bridge to reduce traffic congestion.

Meanwhile, a 14-km long traffic jam has brought the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge highway to a standstill, stretching from the Bangabandhu Bridge to Pauli in Kalihati upazila of Tangail.

Police authorities attribute this gridlock to increased traffic volume and several vehicle breakdowns.

The traffic congestion began on Tuesday morning, causing inconvenience to home-bound travellers and vehicle drivers during the Eid season.
