A construction worker died at Payra port, situated in the Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali.

The deceased is Barek Akon, 35, of the East Jharakhali area of the neighbouring Taltali upazila in Barguna.

The incident occurred in the under-construction bridge project area adjacent to the first terminal in Chingaria of Lalua Union in the upazila on Monday afternoon.

Kalapara police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ali Ahmed mentioned that the port authorities had dispatched the body to Taltali without prior notification to the police.

Consequently, the body was recovered and sent to the Patuakhali morgue for post-mortem examination.

Mohiminul Chowdhury, the assistant engineer overseeing the relevant section of the Payra marine port, said: "We were only made aware of the incident after the worker's body was sent home. Therefore, the police were not notified initially."

According to local sources and law enforcement officials, Barek, who had left his residence to work as a labourer at the project site on Monday morning, fell ill during his duties. He was promptly transported to Kalapara Hospital, where the attending physician pronounced him dead.

Subsequently, the port authorities, without informing the police, arranged for the transportation of the deceased's body to his home. However, upon observing injury marks on Barek's chest, his relatives alerted the authorities, prompting police intervention. The body was then recovered and transferred to the morgue for further examination.

Khalek Akon, the elder brother of the deceased, expressed suspicion surrounding the circumstances of Barek's demise, saying: "My brother has been murdered. The hasty transportation of his body home raised suspicions. Upon discovering injury marks, we notified the police, seeking a fair investigation into this alleged murder."
