Police have barred Jamaat-e-Islami from holding their Iftar party at a restaurant in Barisal city.
The incident took place on Sunday.
Zakir Hossain, in-charge of city special branch of Barisal Metropolitan Police, acknowledged the fact and said there was a political session of Jamaat arranged before Iftar session.
As per the decision of High Court about not allowing political activities in the name of Jamaat, police asked Jamaat not to hold that program, the city SB official added.
On the other hand, Jamaat leaders strongly condemned and protested against not allowing Iftar mahfil.
Barishal city Jamaat Ameer and central working council member Principal Zahir Uddin Muhammad Babar and city Jamaat secretary Professor Maulana Matiur Rahman said after informing the police in advance by writing a letter, they have invited eminent persons of civil society and political leaders to the South King Chinese Restaurant in Barisal city on Sunday for attending the Iftar party.
“When everything was final - at that very moment we were asked not to hold that Iftar Mahfil by the police department,” they said.
Calling the matter very sad, Barisal city public affairs in-charge, Advocate Shah Alam, said: “We are surprised by the police ban on a religious event like Iftar mahfil. We strongly condemn and protest this incident.”
