A government-allotted car, belonging to Sonargaon Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md Ibrahim, fatally struck a local trader in the Aminpur area of Narayanganj on Sunday.

The victim, Wahid Hossain Dilip, 45, was a tiles vendor in the area.

According to the deceased's relatives and locals, Dilip was on his way to his shop in the afternoon when the AC's speeding vehicle ran over him. Md Ibrahim and the driver fled the scene after the accident.

Md Ibrahim and the driver got out of the car and ran away. The car had two pieces of paper with “executive magistrate” and “mobile court” written on them.

Locals rescued Dilip and rushed him to the local upazila health complex in critical condition, where the doctor on duty recommended taking him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment. However, Dilip succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital.

Sonargaon police station Inspector said the AC (land) was in the car when the accident occurred.

The police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, he said, adding that no case had been filed yet in this connection.

AC (Land) Md Ibrahim could not be reached for comment.

“The driver told me that the brake of the car had failed,” Sonargaon Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Abdullah Al Mahfuz said. “However, the matter is under investigation. I have spoken to the relatives of the deceased. The administration will take necessary measures.”

The UNO said no one had been detained, but the driver could be summoned at any time for questioning.

“I will discuss the matter with both sides and take measures.”
