Tangail Awami League leader Golam Kibria alias Boro Moni, who was sued for raping a college girl at gunpoint in Dhaka on Friday, had faced another rape case last year.

Mohammad Mostafa Anwar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Turag police station, said they will arrest the accused regardless of his or her identity. The law enforcers will not compromise in this regard.

Boro Moni is the elder brother of the ruling party member of parliament from Tangail-2 (Gopalpur-Bhuapur) constituency, Tanvir Hasan alias Chhoto Moni.

On April 4, last year, a 17-year-old girl filed the case at Tangail Sadar police station. Nigar Aftab, wife of Golam Kibria Bara Moni, was also made an accused in the case. Later, in the medical examination of the girl, the medical board of Tangail General Hospital found no signs of rape, but the girl was 24 weeks pregnant.

Later, Boro Moni obtained four weeks of anticipatory bail from the High Court in the rape case. On April 30, 2023, the Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division cancelled the bail order and ordered him to appear before the court within two weeks. Later, Boro Moni surrendered before the court on May 15, and the court sent him to jail.

According to the case statement, Boro Moni was a relative and acquaintance of the girl. They used to talk over the phone. The girl had a dispute over property with her brother, and she informed Boro Moni, who had said he would solve the problem. Later, on December 17, 2022, Boro Moni asked the girl to go to a flat on the fourth floor of a 10-storey building next to his house in Adalat Para. When the girl reached there, Boro Moni at first tried to persuade her to get physically involved with him. Once the girl did not agree, he seized her mobile phone and locked her in a room.

After about three hours, he entered the room and raped her. After the rape, he threatened the girl with severe consequences if she went on to reveal the incident. He even threatened to kill her with a gun. After that, Boro Moni repeatedly raped the girl by holding her hostage with photographs taken during the first rape. The girl mentioned in the case statement that she became pregnant as a result of this rape. When she told Boro Moni of the unborn child, he pressurized the girl for an abortion. He even took the girl to his in-law's house in Adalat Para to force her to have an abortion.

As she did not agree, Boro Moni locked her in a room in that house. Later, she was raped there again. After the rape, Boro Moni and his wife beat her up severely, and the girl became ill, according to the case statement. On April 5, last year, the girl filed a case against Boro Moni and his wife, Nigar Aftab, with the Tangail Sadar police station. The following day, the girl gave a statement under Section 22 before a Tangail court. A medical report also revealed that the girl was 24 weeks pregnant.

After that, the accused appeared before the court and pleaded for bail. But the court did not grant him bail and sent him to jail. Following this, his bail plea was repeatedly rejected by the court. Meanwhile, on June 30 last year, the victim gave birth to a child.

In the meantime, Boro Moni filed a bail plea with the High Court, and the court granted him six months' interim bail on July 11, 2023. The next day, the state appealed to the Appellate Division against the High Court decision, and Boro Moni’s bail was cancelled. At the same time, the Appellate Division asked the investigators to submit the DNA report of the child. Following the submission of the DNA report on October 9, the Appellate Division ruled that Boro Moni was not the biological father of the child, and at the same time, it granted bail to the accused. Boro Moni came out of jail three days later.

On November 18, last year, the police recovered the body of the plaintiff in the case from her residence. The body was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her residence in Kartia Union of Tangail Sadar Upazila.

According to sources, after the birth of the child, the Esha did not leave the house much. After the child's DNA report did not match Boro Moni, she suffered an emotional breakdown. Her sudden death had created a sensation in the area.

Meanwhile, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) submitted a report to the court only based on the allegations of assault and not the allegations of rape, said Investigation Officer Khandkar Ashraful Kabir.

In the latest case, the 21-year-old victim accused Boro Moni of raping her at gunpoint at his residence in the capital's Uttara on Friday night. She later filed a case in this regard with Turag Police Station on Saturday.
