Workers of Gulshan Spinning Mill staged a protest by blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Sreepur, Gazipur, around 2pm on Thursday, demanding an increase in salary as mandated by the government.

The workers said that while the government has established a salary structure, the factory management is failing to adhere to it, resulting in underpayment.

Additionally, they demanded the payment of Eid bonuses.

Police intervened in the protest, dispersing the workers with tear gas shells.

Lutfur Rahman, sub-inspector (SI) of Mawna Highway police station, said that workers from Gulshan Spinning Mill, situated in the Jainabazar area, initiated the protest by blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, resulting in significant traffic congestion.

Zamir Uddin, manager of Gulshan Spinning Mill, expressed that he was unaware of the cause of the workers' blockade on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.

Sarwar Alam, superintendent of police (SP) of Gazipur Industrial Police-2, said that police urged the workers to disperse from the highway around 3pm. However, the situation escalated when enraged workers hurled bricks at police personnel and attempted to vandalize vehicles parked on the highway. Subsequently, police resorted to firing tear gas shells to restore peace and order.
