Two policemen placed on 2-day remand over extortion on highway

Two policemen have been placed on two-day remand in a case filed in connection with extortion on the Dhaka-Tangail highway. 

The arrested two constables are Ripon Rajbanshi, 28, son of Kaila Rajbanshi of Mirikpur village of Basail Upazila of Tangail and Mohsin Mia, 31, son of Moynal Haque of Kodalia village of Chauhali Upazila of Sirajganj. They are currently working in the Daulatpur police station of Manikganj district. 

They were arrested while extorting money from drivers at the Dherua area of ​​the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge highway in Mirzapur on Sunday.

Mirzapur police station Officer-in-Charge Md Rezaul Karim confirmed the matter on Tuesday. 

Judge Monirul Islam placed them on remand when they were produced before the Mirzapur Bangabandhu Bridge Cognizance court on Monday with a 7-day remand plea. 

After this incident, the accused policemen were also suspended. 

According to police sources, the pickup van driver Rana Mia was coming from Dhaka towards Tangail. Ripon Rajbanshi and Mohsin Mia, wearing police uniforms, were stopping vehicles and extorting money from drivers in the Dherua area of ​​the highway. 

At one point, Rana signaled Mia's pickup van but he continued to drive forward.

At one point they stopped Rana Mia's van after chasing him with a motorcycle.

They claimed that he had fake money. Later, they snatched Tk11,500 from him. Hearing Rana's screams, the locals reported the matter to the Deohata police outpost. 

Later the police came and arrested Ripon and Mohsin. 

At one stage of interrogation, they identified themselves as policemen.

Police uniforms, a handcuff, Tk30,000, and a motorcycle were seized from them. 

The pickup driver Rana filed a case as a plaintiff in this incident.
