Five members of a family, including three children, died, and another child was severely injured from electrocution in Moulvibazar’s Juri upazila in the early hours of Tuesday.

The incident happened after an electric wire fell on the tin roof of a house owned by Foizur Rahman due to heavy rain and a storm. While trying to leave the house during this time, five members of the same family were electrocuted to death.

The deceased were Foizur Rahman, 52, his wife Siri Begum, 45, daughters Samia Begum, 16, Sabina, 13, and son Sayem, eight.

At the time, their daughter six-year-old Sonia was injured.

Juri police station Inspector Humayun Kabir said: “After Fajr prayers, the main line of Palli Bidyut near the deceased Foizur Rahman's residence became disconnected. At this time, the disconnected main line, resembling sparks, fell in the area around Foizur Rahman's tin house, immediately electrifying the entire house and causing a fire. This followed the electrocution and death of the five family members.

“On receiving the information, Juri Fire Service personnel arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire. Later, the bodies were recovered from the house by local people.”

Meanwhile, the severely injured Sonia was sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Her condition is said to be critical.
