Four madrasa students have been arrested for their involvement in the derailment of the Mymensingh-bound Bijoy Express in Comilla's Nangalkot on Sunday.

Riton Chakma, senior assistant engineer (roads) of Railways, lodged a case at Laksam Railway police station on Monday.

Confirming the arrests, Laksam Railway police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Murad Ullah Bahar said on Tuesday that the railway authorities filed the case against four individuals at Laksam police station the previous night. They were arrested from Teligram village in Chouddagram upazila in connection with the train accident.

Murad said: “Prior to the incident, some teenagers were spotted wandering on the railway tracks, prompting locals to give chase. The individuals dropped a schoolbag and fled the scene. Upon inspection of the abandoned bag, three railway bearing plates and birth certificates were discovered, leading to the arrest of the suspects.”

The case, filed under the Special Powers Act, speculates that the accident may have occurred due to the removal of the fishplate from the railway line.

The four individuals suspected of involvement in the incident have been arrested and remanded to the juvenile correctional centre following court proceedings.

Several people were injured as nine bogies of Jamalpur-bound Bijoy Express train from Chittagong veered off the tracks at Tejer Bazar in Nangalkot, Comilla, on Sunday.

Train operation on the down line resumed 14 hours after the derailment early Monday.
