The postmaster of Tanor post office in Rajshahi has been absconding after pocketing around Tk50 lakh from the deposits made by customers.
Rajshahi Postal Department Inspector Mojibur Rahman filed a general diary at the local police station in this regard and accused postmaster Moksed Ali of stealing the money. The postal department is currently running a full-fledged probe after the incident was proven to be true in a preliminary investigation.
Regional Deputy Postmaster General (Investigation) Mohammad Moniruzzaman confirmed the matter to the media. He said that following a departmental investigation, the postmaster was suspended, and customers have been asked to come to the post office with their receipt books.
So far, the officials have confirmed that around Tk33 lakh is missing from the deposits, and they fear the amount could be Tk50 lakh. The exact amount missing could be ascertained after checking the deposit slips of the customers, the official said.
Meanwhile, the suspended postmaster has been asked to cooperate with the department during the investigation. But he is nowhere to be found.
One of the victims, Zainal Abedin of Kamargaon Bargharia village, said: “I have a fixed deposit of Tk6 lakh at the post office, and the account was opened in 2021. Later in 2022, I deposited another Tk4 lakh. They gave me an official document for the first deposit, but for the second one, they gave me a handwritten note.”
Similarly, Arup Kumar deposited Tk5.38 lakh with the post office, while Pushpa Rani deposited Tk5 lakh. The postal department said the list of such clients is getting longer every day, and they are currently working to ascertain the exact amount that has been stolen.
Abdur Rahim, officer-in-charge (OC) of Tanor police station, said that a general diary has been filed with the police station in this regard.
