“Everyone is spending the day in fear following the news that the MV Abdullah ship was captured by pirates on Tuesday afternoon. My parents won’t survive if anything happens to my brother.”

These words were spoken by Mitu Akhter, the sister of Sabbir Hossain, who is among the 23 sailors aboard the cargo ship MV Abdullah, which fell victim to piracy in the Indian Ocean.

Father Harun-ur-Rashid and mother Saleha Begum are overcome with grief upon learning of their son’s abduction.

Their daughter Mitu Akhter is fervently praying for her brother’s safety.

She recounted her brother’s recent communication, indicating his cheerful spirits. However, since the news of the ship’s capture surfaced, Sabbir’s whereabouts remain unknown, plunging the family into distress.

Villagers and relatives have been flocking to their home to offer solace, attempting to alleviate their anguish.

The family urged the government to secure Sabbir’s swift release from captivity.

Sabbir Hossain is a native of Danga Dhalapara village in Sahabatpur union of Nagarpur upazila. He completed his SSC from Sahabatpur High School in 2014 and his HSC from Kagmari MM Ali College in Tangail in 2016.

After that, he joined Chittagong Marine Academy and graduated with distinction.

In June 2022, he began his career as a merchant officer on the cargo ship MV Abdullah.

Sabbir’s cousin, Ahmed Hossain Rana, expressed concern over Sabbir’s well-being, highlighting the family’s vulnerable situation.

“Sabbir is the sole breadwinner, and his father, incapacitated by a brain haemorrhage, relies on constant care,” he added.

Rana appealed to the government for Sabbir’s immediate release, underscoring the dire consequences his absence would entail.
