At a time when prices of essential items are skyrocketing, 100 families in Tangail were able to buy six essential items for Tk10 each.

The items that cost Tk390 at a grocery store were offered to them in exchange for token money. Shishuder Jonno Foundation took the initiative.

They distributed the items among 100 low-income families on Monday.

The organizers said they took the initiative so that the low-income group could afford some essential items ahead of Ramadan. The items were one kilogram of rice, half a kilogram of lentils, half a litre of soybean oil, one kilogram of puffed rice, half a kilogram of chickpeas and the same amount of onion.

The organizers said they were happy to be able to contribute to the local community ahead of Ramadan.

Samia Akhter and Taslima Khatun, both came to collect the items, told Dhaka Tribune that they greatly benefited from the initiative as they were unable to buy these items from a regular shop.

One of the foundation's members, Ahsan Habib, said he has been working with the foundation for four years. Alongside his studies, he is trying to assist the organizers in their endeavour to help the poor. They will organize iftar distribution during Ramadan as well, he said.

Mueed Hasan Tarit, the founder of Shishuder Jonno Foundation, said they distributed the items among 100 low-income people. This time, the arrangement was on a small scale. They have plans to expand such an initiative shortly.

Mueed said the foundation will offer grocery items for Eid in a similar fashion during the month of Ramadan.

He said that their initiative would get a boost if affluent people came forward to help the poor in different ways.
