Barguna municipal polls: 40 outsiders held over influencing votes

A mobile court has detained 40 people on charges of entering as outsiders and influencing the Amtali municipal elections in Barguna Saturday morning.

The names of those detained were not immediately known.

Amtali Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Muhammad Ashraful Alam said: “During the election of Amtali municipality, 40 people were detained from different centres when outsiders entered and spread influence. The detainees have been kept in police custody. Legal action will be taken against them.”

Barguna district election officer and returning officer Abdul Hai Al Hadi said: “All preparations have been made to conduct the polls in a fair and peaceful manner. Despite two isolated incidents, the environment has remained normal so far. Voter turnout has been normal since morning.”

Two platoons of BGB, 90 Ansar battalions, two teams of RAB and sufficient policemen are on duty in each centre with one executive magistrate and one judicial magistrate for fair and peaceful polling.

Barguna Deputy Commissioner Md Rafiqul Islam and Superintendent of Police Abdus Salam are monitoring various polling stations.

A total of 54 candidates including nine candidates for the post of mayor, nine candidates for reserved seat, and 36 candidates for the post of general councillor are contesting in the Amtali municipal election.

Amtali municipal elections are being conducted through Electronic Voting Machine (EVM).

The total number of voters in the municipality is 15,839 people. Among them 7,578 are male voters while 8,259 female voters.
