On the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of poet Jibanananda Das, a four-day watercolour workshop has begun in Barisal.

The workshop was launched at the Zilla Shilpakala Academy of Barisal on Thursday with the help of local fine arts organizations -- Joler Dhara, Nandan Art School, and Gias Art Academy.

Renowned artist Sohag Parvez is the chief instructor in this watercolour workshop.

On the opening day, more than 50 trainees participated in the workshop.

Parvez said: “At the workshop, the participants are being trained on watercolour painting while sitting in nature.

“We’re also giving them an idea as to how they can develop themselves as artists,” he added.

Born on February 17, 1899, Jibanananda Das is arguably the most influential romantic poet of the post-Tagore era, as he greatly contributed to Bengali literature.

Known as the "Ruposhi Banglar Kobi" (Poet of the beautiful Bengal), he is the creator of “Bonolota Sen”, the unparalleled character embodying the serene beauty of a Bangali woman.

Jibanananda Das got hit by a tram while crossing a road near Kolkata’s Deshpriya Park on October 14, 1954. He succumbed to his injuries on October 22, 1954.
